Highs and lows for Proton Competition at the Hungaroring

Whilst Keagan Masters suffered a setback at the fifth round of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup at the Hungaroring (26 July), his team-mate Kai Pfister made yet another strong impression. At the Hungaroring, the 50-year-old secured his best result of the season so far.

The Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup race weekend proved to be a very close affair from the outset. Keagan Masters, who went into the weekend in fourth place in the championship, was just 0.3 seconds slower than the third-placed driver with his fastest qualifying time. However, due to the high level of competitiveness, this was only enough for eleventh on the grid. In the race, Masters was looking to mount a comeback, but during a chaotic opening lap he was innocently caught up in a collision and was forced to retire due to the damage sustained.

Kai Pfister finished the race in 23rd place, which is the ambitious gentleman driver’s best result of the season so far in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup. The 50-year-old from Würzburg was involved in thrilling battles with other gentleman drivers and even had a duel with the 1997 Formula 1 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve.

“Keagan’s bitter retirement was disappointing for the whole team. After a difficult qualifying session, we’d set ourselves the target of mounting a comeback in the race. Unfortunately, he was innocently forced off the track on the first lap. Kai put in a strong performance in Hungary, which was crowned by his best result of the season, which we’re delighted about,” said Michael Dirsch, who heads Proton Competition’s programme in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup.

The international one-make series now heads into a four-week summer break before the series resumes from 21 to 23 August at the Zandvoort Dune Circuit. What makes this round special is that, as two races will be held, Proton Competition will have twice the chance to make up valuable points.
